Memoirs of J Cole, former pupil of Mr Bingley

Mr Bingley lived in Perranporth, Cornwall during WW2, and certainly into the 1950's. As a child of 9 to 11, I would drop into his tiny studio on my way home from school and stand quietly behind him as he painted. One day he painted a miniature  on thick board of fishing boats going out at sunset, gave it to me and said "here you are, take this home and copy it." Being an obedient child, I did so and took my attempt back to him. Looking back I think this must have been a test, because he then offered to give me lessons. I think these cost either half a crown or five shillings. He provided the board, and paints and if my mother wished, he would frame (passe partout) the finished picture for us. I have about 8 such pictures as well as two genuine "Bingleys" one of Perranporth beach and the other entitled "From green to gold" - Autumn afternoon on the River Dart, Devon, 1957. The latter picture I purchased from Mr Bingley when he had sent me an invitation to an exhibition in London in the late 1950's. The price at the time was ten guineas, but as I was a former pupil he said he would only charge me five!
