Taken from Hidden Talents: A Dictionary of Neglected Artists working 1880 - 1950 by Jeremy
Wood. (Published by Jeremy Wood Fine Art, 1997, printed by The Marstan Press Ltd.)
Herbert Harding BINGLEY A.B.W.S. (fl. 1927 - 1933)
Painter in watercolour of marines, coastal scenes and, particularly, West Country Views. Some of
the artist's work is inscribed and dated and he was certainly active 1927 - 1933.
Contrary to this publication, Herbert Harding Bingley is actually HENRY Harding Bingley.
This fact is proven by birth and death certificates as well as by those who knew him personally. The image above the
photograph of Mr Bingley shows Bingley's attestation paper for WWI. The second signature is that of Henry Harding
Bingley "signature of recruit". The document gives his address and age and lists his occupation as artist.
However, it should be noted that Henry Bingley was known to his family as "Jim".
This is due to the fact that he and his brothers all had nicknames that had little or indeed nothing to do with their first
names.
